What is external wall insulation?
External wall insulation (EWI) is a layer of insulation boards fixed to the outside walls of your house. It’s covered with a base coat and mesh then finished in render or brick slips. The insulation keeps heat in. The finish protects it from the weather and gives the house a new look.
It’s mainly used on solid wall homes. These are houses with no cavity to fill, which is common in older properties. Because it all goes on the outside you don’t lose any room indoors. We work on the outside with minimal disruption, so it shouldn’t cause any real problems for anyone living in the house.
The thickness of insulation depends on the house and how much space there is around windows, doors and roof edges. Sills, pipes and other fittings on the walls often need moving or extending so the finished wall looks right. We’ll go through what’s likely to need moving or extending on the survey.
How an EWI system goes on
An external wall insulation system is made up of layers that work together. Each one has a job, and the system is only as good as the way each layer goes on. These are the main stages.
Fittings like pipes and lights come off. Loose render is removed and the walls are made sound.
Insulation boards are bonded and fixed to the walls.
A reinforcing mesh is bedded into a base coat to give the finish a strong surface.
Is it right for your home?
External wall insulation is often worth looking at if:
- Your house has solid walls with no cavity
- Rooms feel cold even with the heating on
- The outside of the house needs work anyway
- You don’t want to lose room inside to internal insulation
It’s less likely to be the right choice if the house already has filled cavity walls, or if there isn’t room to extend sills and roof edges. Listed buildings and some conservation areas also have restrictions.
Every job starts with a free survey. We’ll check your walls and tell you honestly whether insulation is worth it for your home.
How much does external wall insulation cost?
It’s priced job by job after a free survey. The main things that change the price are:
- The wall area and the number of windows and doors
- The thickness of insulation
- The finish you choose
- Scaffolding, access and anything that needs moving like pipes or meters

From the street a finished EWI job looks like a freshly rendered house. The difference is what’s underneath. Here are a few of our recent jobs.

External wall insulation questions
Do I need planning permission?
Planning rules can apply, especially for listed buildings, conservation areas or where the look of the house changes a lot. Check with your council before you commit.
Will it change how the house looks?
Yes. The walls come out slightly and the finish is new. Window sills and roof edges may need extending. We’ll explain exactly what changes on the survey.
How long does it take?
A standard three bed semi takes from 10 to 14 days. Render can’t go on in heavy rain or frost so the weather can move things.
Where do you fit EWI?
Across Warwickshire and the West Midlands, including Warwick, Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Coventry.
