Signs your render needs repairing

  • Cracks you can see from the ground, especially around windows and doors
  • Patches that sound hollow when you tap them. That’s called blown render
  • Bulging or render coming away from the wall
  • Damp patches inside on an outside wall
  • Staining under cracks where water has been running

Small cracks can let water in. Over a winter that water can freeze, push the render off the wall and cause damp inside. Getting it looked at early usually means a smaller repair.

How render repairs work

Find the cause

Leaking gutters, movement or failed render all need fixing differently.

Cut out the damage

Loose and blown render comes off back to sound wall.

Repair and match

The area is re-rendered and finished to blend with the rest of the wall as closely as possible.

Repair or re-render?

If the damage is in one or two areas a repair is usually the sensible option. If large areas are blown or the render keeps cracking, patching can end up costing more over time. Then a full re-render may be better value. We’ll recommend one on the survey.

Matching old render exactly isn’t always possible, especially on painted or weathered walls. We’ll talk you through how close the match will be before we start.
